From the age of nine, Greg Coffin studied classical piano under both the Suzuki and AMEB methods performing regularly in concerts and winning many awards in eisteddfods until the age of nineteen. In 1995 he completed his Bachelor of Music majoring in jazz piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where his teachers included Paul McNamara, Mike Nock, Roger Frampton, Craig Scott and Graeme Lyall.
A member of the Java Quartet since 1996, he has recorded four albums touring nationally, as well as performing in Germany and at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1997. As a founding member of the highly regarded Coffin Brother’s Quartet (along side saxophonist brother Sean) he has performed nationally and recorded two albums – the first a live album in 2004, the second a soon to be released studio album in early 2009. |
Greg has also recorded albums with the Simon Sweeney Sextet, the Neilsen Gough Quartet, been a regular member of the Space Cadets since 2003, toured nationally with the “Mark4”, a band led by bassist Mark Harris and featuring the wonderful James Muller on guitar and performed regularly with Australian jazz greats such as Dale Barlow, John Pochee and Steve Hunter.
From September 2004 to February 2006 Greg lived and worked in Kyoto, Japan. His skills quickly earned him a fearsome reputation resulting in regular performances in some of Japan’s most famous Jazz Clubs in Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Nagoya. |
Greg’s versatility has led to cabaret performances with Natalie Gamsu and Andrew Bukenya, musical theatre, national tours with funk band Professor Groove and the Booty Affair and pop band Swoop supporting Kate Ceberano. He has recently recorded a soon to be released pop/rock record with singer Andy Walton, co-writing two of the tracks.
On December 16th 2008, to huge acclaim from both critics and peers alike, Greg released his much anticipated debut Greg Coffin Trio album, “It’s Neither Either Or. It’s Both And.” on Jazzgroove Records, featuring the talents of Cameron Undy on Acoustic Bass and Nic Cecire on drums. |
